Seat Unique Stadium
Bristol, United Kingdom
Formerly: Ashley Down Ground, Fry's Ground, Phoenix County Ground, Royal & Sun Alliance County Ground, Bristol County Ground
Seat Unique Stadium sits in Ashley Down.
Gloucestershire County Cricket Club have played here since the land was bought in 1889. The history is in the name changes rather than the architecture. It started as the Ashley Down Ground, then became Fry's Ground when the chocolate makers took over. Later came Phoenix County Ground, then Royal & Sun Alliance County Ground, before returning to Bristol County Ground. The current name is a commercial update from 2022.
The surface is natural grass.
The crowd fills the seats for big matches. The record of 10,000 people was set in 1948 when Sir Don Bradman’s Australian team visited. That was a different era. Now, international fixtures bring visitors, but the ground is small enough that you can hear the players. The last significant event was the Women's Test match in 2021. Before that, there was a concert and some drone shows. The ground does everything, but it does it quietly.
The entrance is marked by a simple sign. Fans walk up the path to join the others. Inside, the players prepare on the pitch. The atmosphere is calm until the first ball is bowled.
