Seymour Shaw Park (Synthetic)

Seymour Shaw Park sits quietly on Parkside Road in Miranda, a suburb of Sydney. The ground opened in 1950.

The most striking feature is the pitch itself. In February 2007, the park received Australia’s first FIFA-approved synthetic football field. It was a gamble, supplied by TigerTurf, and it has survived since. The original surface was replaced in February 2015 with a new 'Endurance 60' surface, but the commitment to artificial turf remains. You can see the difference immediately. The grass banks are uneven, worn smooth by decades of cricket and netball, but the playing area is flat and consistent. There is no mud, no divots, and no need to cancel a match because the pitch cut up badly.

The Sutherland Sharks call this place home. They do not have a grandstand that towers over the crowd. The capacity is 5,000, but only 1,000 seats are under a simple structure. The rest of the spectators stand on the earth, leaning against the slope. It is a working-class ground, not designed for spectacle.

The venue has hosted bigger games than it usually sees. The attendance record is 1,566, set on December 9, 2018, for a W-League clash between Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar. Two years earlier, the 2009 W-League Grand Final was played here, with 1,439 people watching Sydney FC edge the Roar 3–2. Those were rare occasions when the park felt like a destination. On most other nights, the Sharks play in front of a fraction of that crowd. The history between them and their rivals adds an edge, but the stadium itself offers nothing more than a hard, flat surface and a view of the street. It is a place where the light hits the synthetic fibres at a certain angle in the late afternoon, and the players know exactly how the ball will stop.
