For the 1974 World Cup, the ground was expanded until 54,000 seats became 81,365. By 2003 the ground had reached 83,000, a figure that only ever appeared on six matchdays that season — the Schalke derby among them — before the FIFA World Cup 2006 preparations settled the number closer to where it sits today.
The name has moved with the sponsors and the competition.
