The arena stands on the footprint of the SKK Petersburg, the Soviet-era sports and concert complex demolished in 2020 to clear the site. SKA Arena opened on 9 December 2023 with the KHL All-Star Game, though its first competitive fixture waited until 11 February 2024, when SKA beat Sochi 8:1 in front of an announced crowd of 21,481.

Capacity runs to 21,500 for hockey, raised to 22,500 during the 2024 Gagarin Cup play-offs and to 23,000 for concerts. On 9 June 2024 a fire broke out in the wiring of an advertising display, damaging the rink-side boards and roughly 200-225 square metres of seating; nobody was hurt, and repairs were finished by October. The bigger disruption followed: faults in the fire-suppression system kept SKA away from its own arena for most of the 2024/2025 season, with the club not returning until 17 December 2024. By the 2025/2026 season SKA had stopped playing there altogether, priced out by the rent.

With the home team gone, the building has leaned on its concert calendar — Anna Asti in June 2025, Jason Derulo that September, with Sergey Lazarev and the band Zveri booked for 2026 — and on one-off hockey fixtures such as the 2024 Cup of the First Channel.
