Skënderbeu Stadium
Korçë, Albania
The white concrete wall along Rruga Kristaq Papargjini carries the name Stadiumi Skënderbeu in large red letters, sitting above a run of red-painted doorways and windows. A red ticket booth, marked Biletari, stands apart among the trees nearby. The approach to the ground is dominated by a marble monument on a plinth, the head and shoulders of a man in a cap, a figure that defines the space before the gates.
The stadium itself is less a modern arena than a structure that has been patched and altered over decades. The renovation completed in 2011 for UEFA standards replaced the old concrete terraces with individual seats, cutting the capacity from its original twelve thousand to the current five thousand eight hundred. The pitch remains natural grass, a rectangle of 105 metres by 68 metres, and the floodlights are tall steel pylons.
Since KF Skënderbeu Korçë began playing here in 1957, the ground has hosted Albania national team matches and UEFA Champions League qualifiers. The club's official site is fkskenderbeu.al, though the stadium has no independent online presence. A contract awarded in September 2023 to the Danish office CEBRA and UNO Architects calls for a complete rebuild and a new complex with ten thousand seats, but construction is unlikely to start before 2025.
