Yug-Arena Sports Complex
Stavropol, Russia
The entrance to the Yug-Arena Sports Complex presents a formalised face to the street. Above the main portal, the full title of the facility is displayed. This facade belongs to a building that opened on 20 June 2019, replacing older, open-air courts that had long served the city’s athletes.
Inside, the complex trades the vastness of a football stadium for the intimacy of a multi-purpose hall. The main arena, which seats 500 spectators, plays host to the women’s basketball club Stavropolchanka-SKFU in the Russian Super League 1. The pitch is not grass, but standard parquet, a surface chosen for its grip under basketball and volleyball shoes. Adjacent to this is a separate area with a rubberised track.
The structure itself is perhaps its most honest feature. It does not pretend to be a cathedral of the game. The exterior is functional, a block of grey steel and glass. It is a facility built for the future of sport in the Krai, funded by the regional budget and managed by the local sports school.
