Sokil
The building on Sportyvna Square carries one name and is known by another. Officially it has always been the Palace of Sports — no rebranding, no sponsor's name over the door — but the address meant one thing: this was where Sokil Kyiv played their hockey.
That double life runs through the place. Lay ice and it is a rink; take the ice out and it is a hardwood or synthetic surface for basketball, volleyball and handball, which is the configuration behind the 7,513 seats. Since 2018 the regular occupant has been the basketball club Kyiv-Basket , so the ice-hockey association now belongs largely to the past.
It went up between 1958 and 1960 to designs by the architects Mykhailo Hrechyna and Oleksiy Zavarov, with Viktor Repyakh as engineer, and opened on 9 December 1960.
One thing worth clearing up for anyone searching: the Sokil Ice Palace is a separate and much smaller building.
