Sophia Gardens

The red welcome board greets visitors with a bilingual inscription, **Sophia Gardens** alongside **Gerddi Sophia**. This is the only cricket ground in Cardiff, and its location in the Pontcanna district places it against a backdrop of Bute Park rather than the city centre. The structure itself is a study in modern steel; the exposed trusses and walkways create a skeletal appearance that has defined the site since the major redevelopment finished in 2008.

Inside, the space functions as much as a museum as a stadium. The **CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket** looks out over the pitch through a wall of windows, flanked by life-sized cutouts of players in white kits. One depicts a batsman mid-shot, the other a figure in a tall hat, anchoring the history of the place in the room itself. The view from the dining area is unobstructed: a green rectangle of natural grass, rolled and closely mown, surrounded by blue and white seating.

The ground opened its doors in 1967 after Glamorgan County Cricket Club moved from Cardiff Arms Park. Since then, it has hosted the sport’s most significant events, including the 1999 Cricket World Cup and the 2019 edition, where it staged matches for England and Afghanistan. It also hosted the 2015 Ashes opener, a game that drew a crowd twice the town's population. The capacity sits at 15,643, a figure established following a £9.5 million rebuild that replaced the previous 5,500 seats.

The venue has seen its name change several times due to sponsorship, originally becoming SWALEC Stadium before reverting to its historic title in 2018. It has also hosted concerts, including performances by My Chemical Romance and 'A Night With Abba'. The highest attendance for a domestic match remains 9,200, set in 2010 during a Twenty20 Cup clash. The ground stands as a quiet fixture in the Welsh sporting landscape, its steel frame visible from the street, its history preserved within.
