Southwest University Park

The ground sits on ground that used to be city government: the El Paso City Hall stood here until the site was cleared, and by May 2013 the diggers were in. Downtown El Paso got a ballpark where its administration had been, next to Cleveland Square and on the streetcar line.

It cost $78 million and was designed by Populous with MNK Architects, opening on 28 April 2014 under a name that arrived only weeks earlier: through the planning years the drawings said "Downtown El Paso Ballpark", until Southwest University signed a twenty-year deal in March 2014.

The El Paso Chihuahuas have had it since day one, and the crowd figures tell you the seating bowl stretches further than the listed capacity — 10,022 came through for a Padres exhibition on 2 April 2016, still the single-game record. From 2019 the ground has been shared with El Paso Locomotive FC, so the natural grass now takes a football season on top of a baseball one.

It has never been rebuilt, only adjusted: netting extended in 2018, interior work in 2019, cashless payment in 2021, sensory-inclusive certification in 2023. The building has also been used for things well outside sport. On 14 August 2019 it held the memorial service for the victims of the Walmart shooting, five months after it staged the Triple-A All-Star Game.
