Sporting Park

For most of its life this ground has carried somebody else's name. It opened on 9 June 2011 as Livestrong Sporting Park; that arrangement ended in January 2013 when the partnership with Lance Armstrong's foundation was wound up. Two seasons passed under the plain name Sporting Park, until a ten-year agreement with Children's Mercy Hospital took effect late in 2015. The deal expired in early 2026, and for the 2026 MLS season the stadium reverted to the unsponsored name it had used in between.

Populous designed it and Turner Construction built it for roughly $200 million. A translucent polycarbonate canopy covers every seat, its curve drawn to follow the arc of a ball; the exterior is clad in aluminium composite panels in a multi-coloured chequered pattern. Under the grass sits a heating and moisture management system.

It did exactly that on 7 December 2013, when the MLS Cup final drew 21,650 — some three thousand above the 18,467 the ground holds for league matches, and still the record here. Sporting Kansas City won it on penalties after Real Salt Lake refused to go away. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final came twice, against Seattle Sounders FC in 2012 and the New York Red Bulls in 2017.

Concerts push the capacity to 25,000. The first was Farm Aid 26, on 13 August 2011.
