Sportovní hala Bohumín

Bohumín, Czechia

Sportovní hala Bohumín is an indoor sports hall. The flood of September 2024 caused damage — water rose through the corridors. Repairs finished by November, and the hall reopened.

Bohumín is a town in the Czech Republic. Eighteen hundred seats along the sides, nothing more. The roof is flat and unadorned, the steel frame exposed where cladding has peeled back over the years. The artificial turf inside looks nothing like the grass you see outside — it is green and uniform, a carpet laid to withstand the indoor game.

The hall was completed in August 2014, not as a monument but as a practical response to a question no one bothered to ask publicly: where does a town of this size put its handball players when the winter wind picks up? The answer was a steel structure pulled from Opava and a budget that ran slightly over. The city paid the difference, as cities do.

Four surfaces share the same floor, stacked like plates. Basketball, handball, floorball, tennis — all played on the same rectangle, each set of lines painted over the last. The polyurethane court takes up most of the space, four by two, the rest divided among the smaller games. No one remembers which sport came first; the markings simply accumulate.

The building has no website of its own. The address is Koperníkova 1222, and the sign above the door reads SH Bospor, though the locals call it Bosporka. That is all you need to find it — past the railway station, through the industrial zone, where the streetlights flicker and the wind gets caught between the warehouses.
