Sportzentrum Kleinfeld

Formerly: Waisenhausmatte, Stadion Kleinfeld

It opened as Waisenhausmatte in 1949, became Stadion Kleinfeld in time, and was pulled down in 2016.

That distinction matters when you arrive. The Sportzentrum Kleinfeld houses the Sportschule Kriens, a fitness centre and a nursery alongside the football, and the football itself spreads across three artificial pitches rather than one. It was designed by Iwan Bühler Architekten with WeberWaber, and it was built because the commune of Kriens and SC Kriens wanted the old ground gone. The money came mostly from elsewhere: the Luzerner Pensionskasse put in 15 million Swiss francs as developer and principal investor, the commune 5 million, with the total landing near 20 million francs before land costs.

The attendance record came a fortnight later, on 13 October, and not in a league fixture — a friendly against Grasshoppers, 2,500 through the gates, the visitors winning 1:3.

SC Kriens play their Challenge League football here.
