The stadium has been the home of Birmingham City Football Club since 1906, a date that the club accepts despite one source suggesting the original structure was built in 1900. The specific architect remains unclear. During the Second World War a bomb fell on the site and completely burned down one of the stands.

Inside, the surface is a hybrid pitch, SISGrass stitched hybrid turf, which was installed in the summer of 2023. The ground once hosted an FA Cup semi-final against Everton on February 11, 1939, a match that ended in a two-two draw and drew a crowd that two different sources argue was either 66,844 or 67,341.

The stadium has a sponsorship name now, St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, but the old name persists in conversation.
