St James Park

Pigs grazed here before footballers did. The ground at the end of Stadium Way was common pasture from 1654, and it kept that use for two and a half centuries before Exeter City's home opened on it on 10 September 1904. The name has never changed since — only the apostrophe wanders, and locals mostly settle for The Park or SJP, borrowed from the railway station next door.

Almost nothing of the original ground survives. The Grandstand burned down in 1925 and was rebuilt the following year; that replacement stood for ninety years before demolition began in November 2017, with the 1,600-seat Adam Stansfield Stand opening in October 2018 in its place. The away end was reworked at the same time, gaining a covered standing section — a rarity in a league where terracing has mostly gone. An earlier round of work, costing around £3.4m and part-funded by student housing built on the site, converted the Big Bank to seats in 2000 and replaced the old Cowshed a year later.

The crowd record belongs to a different era of the ground entirely: 20,984 for an FA Cup sixth-round replay against Sunderland on 4 March 1931, lost 4–2. Manchester United came for a third-round replay in January 2005 and won 2–0, and the gate receipts pulled the club clear of a financial crisis. In January 2016 Liverpool arrived and were led twice before a 2–2 draw; Exeter refused to go away until Anfield settled it.
