For a single season the ground answered to a name that wasn't its own. Newcastle United's owner Mike Ashley rebranded it Sports Direct Arena in 2011, after his retail chain; the sponsorship lasted barely a year before the old name, carried since 1892, came back.

The stadium the club moved into that year bore little resemblance to what stands on Barrack Road now. Archibald Leitch rebuilt it in 1905, pushing capacity up toward 60,000. It shrank again over the following decades, then grew back in pieces: the Taylor Report's push for all-seated grounds brought new Milburn and Leazes stands in the early 1990s, and a bigger reconstruction between 1998 and 2000 added second tiers to the Sir John Hall Stand and the Milburn Stand, lifting capacity from around 36,000 to the 52,305 it holds today.

None of those later changes will ever be tested against the one number still on the books: 68,386 spectators packed in for a match against Chelsea on 3 September 1930, set long before all-seater rules made a crowd that size impossible again.
