In April 1994 the ground in Remera stopped being a football ground. Under UNAMIR protection it became a UN protected site, and roughly 12,000 Tutsi sheltering there sat out the genocide inside a bowl built for sport.

Between 2022 and 2024 the Turkish contractor Summa, working with Real Contractors, took the stadium apart and rebuilt it at a cost of between $165 million and $170 million: a second tier added, the outer perimeter pushed out to 800 metres, the pitch itself raised by two metres, and a canopy carried on imigongo patterns, the geometric Rwandan motif. Capacity went from 25,000 to 45,508. President Paul Kagame re-inaugurated it on 1 July 2024.

Before that came a slower job — renovation from 2011 to 2016 to bring the ground up to CAF standards for the African Nations Championship, which finished with DR Congo beating Mali 3–0 in the final here.

Two months earlier the same ground staged the first match in Rwanda played with VAR.
