Stade Bauer

Rue du Docteur-Bauer runs through Saint-Ouen, north of Paris. The ground that carries its name has stood there since 1909, older than almost anything else Red Star has ever played under. The club itself has changed shape more times than the pitch has — folded into mergers, reorganised, renamed and renamed again — while the stadium kept its own identity, borrowed not from a sponsor or a president but from a doctor shot by the Germans in 1942 for his work in the Resistance. That naming has nothing to do with construction and everything to do with memory: the street was his before the ground was anyone's.

At 5,600, the capacity puts Stade Bauer well below the scale clubs usually need for senior competition, and that mismatch has shaped much of the ground's recent history more than any match result has. The hybrid turf is a newer layer on an old site, the kind of upgrade that speaks to a stadium trying to hold its footing rather than one built fresh for a modern schedule. There has been talk of the ground serving as a training base around the 2024 Olympic period, a small, practical role rather than a headline one, fitting for a stadium that has spent most of its life as a neighbourhood fixture rather than a showpiece.

No architect's name survives in the record, no grand rebuilding story attaches to it, and Red Star's own commercial identity has never been sold off to a naming-rights partner the way the club's on-pitch identity has been reshuffled over the decades. What remains is a small ground in Saint-Ouen, named for a man who never saw a match played there, still standing more than a century after it opened.
