Stade Bugesera

Nyamata, Rwanda

On the map

Stade Bugesera sits in Nyamata, a town in the Bugesera District just outside Kigali. It arrived as a government promise. President Paul Kagame pledged the facility in 2017, and construction began the following year. It was built to replace an older, unfinished site that the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) once suspended for its poor condition.

What catches the eye is the branding. The surface is artificial, known locally as 'tapis', installed when the stadium finally opened in 2020. There is a discrepancy in the official figures for the crowd: the Rwanda Housing Authority claims 4,000 seats, while other reports suggest smaller numbers.

Bugesera FC plays here now, using the pitch as their home. It also serves as a training ground for the national team and a backup option when the main stadium in the capital is under renovation.
