Stade Gabriel Montpied
Clermont-Ferrand, France
Stade Gabriel Montpied sits in the Vergnes district on the northern edge of Clermont-Ferrand. It was designed by architect Jacques Kalisz and opened on December 30, 1995, built specifically to house Clermont Foot after they moved from the Stade Marcel-Michelin, home of the rugby club ASM Clermont Auvergne.
What distinguishes the venue is its recent transformation from a modest 10,000-seat ground into a rolling construction site. This expansion, led by Atelier Ferret Architectures, is building a 6,000-seat covered stand with a roof of 38 steel trusses, part of a €77 million project that aims to eventually bring the capacity to 30,000. The pitch itself remains natural grass, though the club’s training centre nearby has a heated hybrid surface.
The stadium has hosted the Coupe de France Féminine final in 2013 and France Women’s National Team friendlies against Spain and Colombia. It occasionally hosts rugby events, including the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in 2016 and 2017, though ASM Clermont Auvergne remains based at their own ground. The highest official attendance, 13,576, was set for a Ligue 1 match against Olympique de Marseille in February 2023.
