Everyone in Saint-Étienne calls it Le Chaudron, and the name outlasted three separate rebuilds. It has carried that identity through every renovation since — nothing here was ever sold to a sponsor.

The shape changed with the tournaments France hosted. Euro 1984 added fifteen thousand seats and a plexiglass roof, pushing capacity toward 48,000. The 1998 World Cup went the other way: standing terraces came out, seats went in, and the number dropped to just over 35,000, all seated, all modern. Euro 2016 added balcony tiers at the north and south ends and closed in the corners, settling the ground at its current capacity.

The recorded attendance peak, over 47,000, dates to 1985 — a mark set before the 1998 reduction and one the current all-seated configuration cannot match again.

Rugby found the place too: the 2007 and 2023 World Cups both passed through, and in 2024 it hosted men's and women's football at the Olympics, six matches in all. Bruce Springsteen played the Born in the USA tour here in 1985, Johnny Hallyday returned in 2003, and The Police closed a reunion tour date in 2008.

Not everything about the ground's recent history sits easily. Playoff defeat to Auxerre in May 2022 brought crowd trouble, and in June 2016 fans threw flares onto the pitch during Croatia against the Czech Republic at Euro 2016. In May 2024, a planned attack on the stadium was stopped before it happened.

The pitch itself is now AirFibr, a hybrid of natural grass and synthetic fibre.
