Stade Gicumbi
Byumba, Rwanda
Stade Gicumbi sits on a hill in the village of Kibali. It is an older facility built in an "old style," with concrete seating that had deteriorated before the recent works began. The view from the stands looks out over the surrounding landscape, a reminder of its location in the capital of the Gicumbi District.
The ground is currently undergoing a major transformation. Funded by FIFA Forward and the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), the project is replacing the original natural grass with synthetic turf. The work, contracted to TBED Civil Engineering, cost approximately 900 million Rwandan Francs and included repairs to the spectator stands, including VIP areas. The renovation is expected to complete in early 2026, aiming to accommodate 5,000 seated spectators comfortably within its 6,000-capacity structure.
While the stadium is the home of Gicumbi FC, it hosted the opening concert for the Primus Guma Guma Super Star (PGGSS) Season 6 in 2016, drawing thousands of people, and a political rally for President Paul Kagame in July 2024 described as having dozens of thousands of supporters.
The stadium does not have an official website or a specific street address beyond its location in Kibali. It is accessible approximately 10 minutes by moped from the Gicumbi bus station. The original construction year and builder are not explicitly documented in available sources.
