Catania played its first match at Cibali on 28 November 1937, a Serie C tie against Foggia that the home side won 1-0, on a ground designed by the architect Raffaele Leone.

The pitch itself changed under everyone's feet more recently than the naming did. A hybrid surface went down in 2011 and stayed until 2023, when the club turned back to natural turf.
