Stadio Artemio Franchi

The Stadio Artemio Franchi sits on Viale Manfredo Fanti as a football ground. Pier Luigi Nervi designed it.

The name has changed twice. It opened as Stadio Giovanni Berta, became Stadio Comunale after the war, and only took the name of former Italian football federation president Artemio Franchi in November 1991.

Fiorentina have called it home since it opened, and the ground has carried a heavy international schedule over the decades: matches at the 1934 World Cup, the 1960 Olympic football tournament, and the 1993 UEFA Cup final that Fiorentina won on home turf.

Capacity once climbed close to its ceiling — 58,271 packed in for a Serie A meeting with Internazionale in November 1984 — well above the 47,282 the stadium now holds.

The ground has also hosted David Bowie, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen on separate occasions, adding a life beyond matchdays that plenty of comparable stadiums never got.

What defines the Franchi now is the work under way rather than anything on the pitch. A reconstruction running past €100 million, funded partly through Italy's PNRR recovery plan, is under way to bring the stadium up to modern seismic and safety standards, with capacity set to drop to 34,478 once it's done. The project is due to run through to the 2029/30 season.
