Stadio Luigi Ferraris

Two clubs, one ground. Genoa and Sampdoria both call Marassi home. The record for a club match here belongs to that fixture: 57,615 for the derby of 19 April 1982.

The name arrived in 1933, when the arena was dedicated to Luigi Ferraris, a Genoa captain killed in the First World War. It has never carried a sponsor's name since. Before that it was simply the Campo di Via del Piano, the field on Via del Piano, opened on 22 January 1911.

What stands today is not the same structure. Between 1987 and 1989 the ground was demolished and rebuilt to designs by Vittorio Gregotti and Augusto Cagnardi, ready for the 1990 World Cup — capacity then around 36,500. It had already staged World Cup football in 1934, when Spain met Brazil in the last sixteen. In 1990 it took group matches and a round-of-sixteen tie.

The Italy national side has used it for a scattering of matches. On 12 October 2010 a Euro 2012 qualifier against Serbia was abandoned after disorder among the visiting supporters. In 2012 the United States beat Italy here for the first time in the fixture's history.

The pitch is a Mixto hybrid, natural grass stitched with synthetic fibre. Concerts have punctuated the calendar too — Frank Zappa in 1982, Bruce Springsteen in 1999, Vasco Rossi three times over.
