Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino

The Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino sits on Piazzale Grande Torino, in the Santa Rita district, and its name did not always point to what happened there. It opened in 1933 under Achille Starace, secretary of the National Fascist Party, as the Stadio Benito Mussolini, built for Italy's hosting of the 1934 World Cup, though the first match on the pitch had already been played a month before the formal ceremony.

The renaming tells its own story of the twentieth century. After the war it became simply the Stadio Comunale, a name that lasted more than sixty years. A reconstruction ahead of the 2006 Winter Olympics turned it into the Stadio Olimpico. Only in April 2016 did it take its current name, in memory of the Torino players killed in the air disaster of 4 May 1949 — a tribute added decades after the tragedy itself.

The pitch is natural grass, though the old running track beneath the stands has been replaced with a synthetic surface, a detail that marks out how the ground has been adapted rather than rebuilt from scratch. Ownership rests with the City of Turin, which holds the stadium under a concession agreement with Torino FC running to the end of December 2026 — a date that gives the club's tenancy here a visible horizon rather than an open-ended arrangement.
