The concrete bowl on the Maas has been holding people since 27 March 1937, and the shape that gave it its name — De Kuip, the Tub — came from Leendert van der Vlugt and Johannes Brinkman. Ten European finals have been played here, from the Cup Winners' Cup deciders of 1963 and 1968 through the European Cup finals of 1972 and 1982 to the 2002 UEFA Cup final. France beat Italy in extra time on the same grass in the Euro 2000 final; Spain and Croatia settled the Nations League here in 2023.

The stadium has been shrinking for decades, and deliberately. It opened at roughly 64,000, grew to 69,000 by 1949, and stood at that figure when 65,427 came through the turnstiles for Feyenoord against Twente in 1968 — a record that can no longer be approached. Euro 2000 brought only restoration work; the capacity did not move.

Since 1978 the bowl has doubled as a concert venue, opened by Bob Dylan, with the Rolling Stones playing ten shows and Marco Borsato five in 2019. Housing has since been built close by, and in 2024 it was announced that the concerts end in 2026.
