Stadion Grödig
The winter of 2015 caught Stadion Grödig out. With no heating under the pitch, the surface was ruled unplayable and SV Grödig had to take home matches to neutral grounds. The club put in a heating system afterwards, at a cost of around €500,000.
That promotion in 2013 was the reason the place had to grow up quickly. SV Grödig, who have used the ground since 1989, spent five seasons in the top flight before dropping out in 2018. The visit of Red Bull Salzburg drew 3,212 — close to filling it, and the sort of fixture where the table goes out of the window.
The naming has changed hands more often than the tenancy. Sportanlage Grödig gave way to the Untersberg-Arena; then came Das Goldberg Stadion in 2015, Greisbergers Betten-Arena, and now the MGG Arena. The club still owns and runs it.
Salzburg's involvement did not end with the visits. Their reserve side, FC Liefering, plays here, and between 2018 and 2020 the ground took UEFA Youth League fixtures for the Salzburg U19s — European nights on natural grass in a village at the foot of the Untersberg.
