Stadion Hohe Warte
Vienna, Austria
Formerly: Casino-Stadion Hohe Warte, Care Energy Naturarena Hohe Warte
Stadion Hohe Warte sits in the Heiligenstadt part of Vienna, where the land slopes up on three sides. The shape makes it look like a natural amphitheatre, although safety rules have long stopped people from sitting on the grass banks. The main stand holds 2,350 seats, and a mobile stand opposite it takes 1,100. The pitch is natural grass.
The ground is not defined by a single match, but by the American football team, the Vienna Vikings, who have played there for most of the last thirty years. The capacity of 5,500 is a ghost of the past, when the grass banks held tens of thousands. The record for the football matches held here is often cited as 85,000, a number that makes the current quiet empty seats feel heavy.
The address is Klabundgasse 11, but the stadium has no website of its own; you have to go through the club. The stadium opened in 1921, and the first architect, Eduard Schönecker, designed it for a different century.
