What sits underneath all of that is a private undertaking. David 'Daša' Popović , a Novi Sad entrepreneur who also served as club president, drew up the project himself and donated the building materials; the work was carried out jointly with the local Jewish club Judo Makabi Novi Sad. The opening fell on 28 June 1924, Vidovdan.

The name has moved with the politics around it. Karađorđe until 1945, then City Stadium and Vojvodina Stadium through the decades that followed, and Karađorđe again from 2007.

Vojvodina won 1–0 in front of a number generally put somewhere above thirty thousand — more than twice what the all-seater bowl holds now, split between the West, East, North and South stands, with 150 executive suites and fourteen press seats.

It has taken on work beyond FK Vojvodina. The 2009 European Athletics Junior Championships, matches at the 2011 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, a long-running role as home for the Serbia under-21 side, and, in 2022 and 2023, a borrowed home for the Belarus national team. Eros Ramazzotti played here in July 2006; Siniša Mihajlović had his testimonial the following year.
