Stadion Matije Gubca

Krško's football ground carries the name of Matija Gubec, the peasant-revolt leader remembered as a partisan symbol, and the choice says something about how the town relates to the place: this is a stadium built into local memory rather than a corporate-sponsored bowl. The pitch itself has been in continuous use since well before the war years generally cited as its opening — a ground had already been laid out and prepared for matches on the site known as Igrišče pod Žuličem back in 1933, meaning the current stadium grew out of, rather than replaced, an older footballing tradition in the town.

What sets it apart from a typical lower-league venue in Slovenia is its double life. Krško's stadium hosts football for NK Krško, but it was also built to accommodate speedway, and that dual purpose explains the gap between the two capacity figures attached to the ground: just 1,470 seats for football, against a figure of up to 13,728 once the standing areas around the speedway track are counted. Few Slovenian clubs play in front of a stand that was designed with motorsport crowds in mind.

The ground has been shaped gradually rather than in one grand rebuild — expanded in 1951 and again in 1980, then brought up to date with a 2009 renovation, a pattern of incremental work that fits a stadium serving a modest industrial town rather than a flagship project chasing a single tournament deadline. The pitch remains natural grass throughout.
