Štadión MFK
Ružomberok, Slovakia
The ground in Ružomberok does not compete for attention with the mountains behind it. The stands sit low in the valley, with the forested slopes closing in on the horizon. The pitch is green and natural.
The stadium carries on as the home of MFK Ružomberok, the club that has called this place home for decades. The local supporters know the way around the concourses and the rhythm of matchdays. They stayed through the renovations that brought the capacity down from something closer to twenty thousand to the present four thousand eight hundred and seventy-six seats. The west stand came first after 1997, then the east stand in 2006, and a final modernization between 2014 and 2015. The old capacity figures do not matter now.
European nights here have been memorable. MFK Ružomberok played CSKA Moscow in the Champions League in 2006, and Everton came calling in the Europa League qualifiers in 2017. The club also hosted Leeds United in 2010 and won 1–0. The Czechoslovak national team once played here, with Jozef Vengloš, a local son, managing the side.
The floodlights stand tall against the sky. The stadium does not need to be a temple of football to be worth visiting. It is simply the only ground in town, and for the supporters of MFK Ružomberok, it is enough.
