The ground opened in 1941, built largely on club land by volunteers rather than an architect whose name survives in the records. It has seen MŠK Žilina through their first championship in 2002 and the subsequent decade-long reconstruction that rebuilt all four stands and added under-soil heating. The surface is natural grass again; after a brief spell with artificial turf in 2016 that stripped the venue of eligibility for national team matches, the club spent €4 million to bring it back.

This is not a ground that hides its history. The attendance record of 25,000 for a 1953 match between a selected Slovakia team and Dynamo Moscow sits in the archives rather than the stands. More recently, it hosted the final of the 2013 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, where Russia won the tournament, and Group C matches for the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

The club keeps its official website at mskzilina.sk.
