Stadion Schützenwiese

Winterthur's ground shares its name with the sport itself, near enough: Schützenwiese, the "shooting meadow," and locals shorten it to Schützi without much thought. What sets it apart from most Swiss grounds of its size is how old the arrangement is — the pitch opened the same year the club did, 1896, and FC Winterthur has never played anywhere else since.

The stadium sits inside Winterthur itself, on Rennweg, close enough to the centre that there's no ring road or car park moat around it the way newer builds tend to have. That location has shaped every rebuild since: trims and rebuilds to the stands came in 1922, then again in 1957/58 and 1968, each one working around a footprint that couldn't grow outward.

The more recent history is about catching up to top-flight requirements without knocking the place down. When FC Winterthur returned to the Super League in 2022, the city stepped in again with a smaller, faster CHF 1.5 million package covering lighting, safety netting and turnstiles, the kind of stopgap spending that suggests a ground still being asked to do more than its age intended.

A bigger rebuild is now pencilled in for 2027–2029, budgeted at CHF 35 million, aimed at pushing capacity toward 10,000. Until then, the club plays its Super League fixtures on a natural Bio-Rasen pitch.
