Stadion Shinnik

The name outlasted the ideology that gave it a first one. It opened in 1957 as the Dinamo stadium and only later took the name of the Yaroslavl tyre plant it now carries — Shinnik, from shina, tyre.

The record crowd dates to a single night in 1964, a match against Moscow's Dinamo that drew 42,000 people into a ground built for far fewer — spectators sat on the aisles and on the floodlight masts to watch.

The stadium's one major honour on the pitch came on 22 May 2011, when it hosted the Russian Cup final: CSKA beat Alania 2-1 in front of 12,900. Yaroslavl also had two UEFA Intertoto Cup ties here, in 1998 and 2004.

The rebuild for the 2018 World Cup, rather than to host any of the tournament's matches, closed the stadium for a full year — from the summer of 2017 to 1 September 2018 — for new pitch drainage, undersoil heating and irrigation, at a cost of just over 103 million roubles, with a further 20 million spent on the training pitch and its new stand for 3,000. The playing surface itself is now a hybrid: natural grass reinforced with synthetic fibres, stitched in during the 2020 close season, sitting over the heating installed in the earlier work. There is talk of a replacement ground for 12,000 by 2026.
