Stadion Zimowy w Tychach
Tychy, Poland
The arena opened for activity in December 1968. It began as an uncovered rink, and the roof was added a decade later in 1978, along with the stands and outer walls. GKS Tychy hold the main lease, playing in the Polska Hokej Liga, while the women’s team Atomówki Tychy and amateur sides make use of the ice. TKKF Pionier Tychy also trains here for figure skating.
The ice is artificial, kept cold by a refrigeration system. An older ammonia plant failed in 2005, and a containerised glycol unit was installed the following year. A further modernisation between 2007 and the end of 2008 brought in new lighting and upgraded the playing surface. The current capacity sits at 2,753 seats, though a rival source puts the number at 2,535.
Matches here have included the IIHF World U18 Championships Division IB in April 2013 and ice hockey fixtures during the IX Winter European Youth Festival in 2009. GKS Tychy have run a Teddy Bear Toss charity event since 2013, and the venue also hosts exhibitions and product launches when the ice is not in use.
