The ground was raised by hand, not commissioned: staff from the Cluj railway depot, the Atelierele 16 Februarie workshops and the regional rail transport authority built it themselves over 1972 and 1973 under one of the era's "patriotic construction" campaigns. Before the formal opening that summer, the pitch hosted a friendly against a touring Cuban side; the first competitive match followed on 12 August 1973, CFR Cluj beating Petrolul Ploiești 2-1 in the league.

A first refit in 2004 coincided with the club's centenary and its return to the top flight, bringing new floodlights, a resurfaced pitch and rebuilt dressing rooms. The larger transformation came in 2007 and 2008, when the Dico și Țigănaș practice and contractor Transilvania Construction split the ground into four separate stands and pushed it into UEFA's three-star category, work timed to CFR Cluj's first Champions League group-stage campaign following the 2007-08 league title. The reward arrived on 1 October 2008: Chelsea's visit for a Champions League tie drew 20,320 spectators, still the record crowd here. The national side has used the ground sparingly — a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Lithuania, a friendly against Turkey in 2017, a Euro 2020 qualifier against the Faroe Islands. In December 2023, security teams found and removed a remote-triggered smoke device on the approach to a match against a backdrop of friction with Universitatea Cluj supporters.
