Stadionul Petre Libardi

Petroșani has had only one real football ground since 1922, and the current one exists because the first didn't survive. On 25 May 1975, a dropped cigarette during a match against Politehnica Iași set the old wooden stand alight and burned it down; a hotel and the Carl Schreter park now stand where it used to be. The replacement opened seven years later, in August 1982, on Strada Lunca, and for a while it had reason to draw a crowd: Jiul reached the Romanian Cup final twice in the 1970s, losing to Rapid București in 1972 and beating Politehnica Timișoara for the trophy two years later.

That team is the reason the ground was renamed in June 2019. It now carries the name of Petre Libardi, who captained and later coached the club, played roughly 340 matches for Jiul between 1963 and 1975, and led the side out in both of those cup finals. Petroșani made him an honorary citizen in 2001.

Jiul's last top-flight fixture here was on 23 May 2007, a 0-2 defeat to Steaua București, and relegation that summer ended a run the club has not reversed since. Nineteen years on, the 15,500-seat stadium shows it: the seating has aged and the ground is generally described as in need of repair, still hosting CSM Jiul Petroșani in the lower divisions but a long way from the arena that once staged cup finals.
