Stamford Bridge has been Chelsea's ground since the club was founded specifically to play there, in 1905. That is the detail worth knowing: the stadium came first. It opened in 1877 as a running track for the London Athletic Club, and Gus Mears bought the site, brought in Archibald Leitch to rebuild it for football, and only then formed Chelsea Football Club so someone would use it.

Little else at the ground has stayed put since. In its early years terracing pushed the capacity toward 100,000, and the recorded attendance peak, roughly 82,905 for a game against Arsenal in the mid-1930s, belongs to a version of the ground that no longer exists. The Taylor Report, following Hillsborough, forced the rebuild that produced today's Stamford Bridge: four separate all-seater stands, raised through the 1990s and early 2000s, that cut capacity to just over 40,000. A plan to expand toward 60,000 was drawn up in the 2010s and shelved after sanctions were imposed on Roman Abramovich in 2022, so the current bowl, boxed in tight by the surrounding streets, is the one Chelsea have played in for two decades and, for now, the one they are stuck with.

No former name attaches to it. Fulham Road runs past the front of the ground, and the pitch itself is natural turf.
