Stampesletta
Lillehammer, Norway
The main pitch is covered in artificial turf, but the complex has always been about more than one game.
The track and field venue sits alongside the football pitch, and the adjacent Håkons Hall has hosted major concerts, including performances by Stevie Wonder in 2006 and Beyoncé in 2007. The area has also served as the finish line for the Birkebeinerrittet cycling event and the start for the Birkebeinerløpet half-marathon. The surface of the main field is artificial turf, and in 2018 the municipality required a new field using bio-infill made from sugarcane extract, replacing the traditional rubber granulate. This change followed environmental rules set by the local council.
During the 1994 Winter Olympics the venue hosted medal ceremonies for all non-skating events. The podiums were made of ice from the Jostedalsbreen glacier, and crowds of up to 30,000 spectators would gather here. The capacity for the main football field is now 2,000, a fraction of what it held when the original grass pitch opened in 1949. Lillehammer FK plays its home matches on the main artificial turf field, while other teams such as Lillehammer KFK and Roterud IL also use the complex. The Norwegian Athletics Championships were held here in 1977, 1995 and 2009, and the venue hosts the Veidekkelekene tournament every year.
The track and field section opened in 1973, but the site has been used for sport since the 1930s. The land was purchased by the municipality in 1933, and construction began in 1946.
