Szegedi Atlétikai Centrum
Szeged, Hungary
Formerly: SZVSE-Stadion, Szegedi VSE Stadion, Vasutas Stadion
Szegedi Atlétikai Centrum
It is a clean, modern space, though it carries some weight from its history.
The ground first opened its doors in 1937, long before the current structure was assembled. It has seen its share of drama. The most memorable conflict came in 2013, when a controversial relegation playoff against Kisvárda was interrupted multiple times by aggressive fan behaviour. The tension was so high that the club eventually announced they would relocate from the city. That match remains a sore point for the supporters.
Before that, the stadium was a familiar sight for top-flight football in 1941 and again during the 1984-85 season, when Szegedi EOL AK returned to play here while their own facility was being renovated. Today, the capacity is much smaller, with 5,000 seats available.
There is no evidence that the stadium was ever called the Szentiványi Gyula Stadion. The name belongs to a Hungarian artist and painter, not a football ground. The main stadium, however, remains the focal point for the local club, Szeged 2011.
