Ta' Qali Stadium

On 16 December 1984, 35,102 people got into Ta' Qali to watch Malta play West Germany in a qualifier for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Malta lost 2–3, and the figure has stood ever since. Today the ground is all-seater and holds 16,997.

It opened in 1981 as the replacement for the Empire Stadium in Gżira, and it inherited that ground's job wholesale: it is the national stadium. Birkirkara, Valletta, Sliema Wanderers, Qormi, Tarxien Rainbows and Msida Saint-Joseph have all played their cup ties and European qualifiers here rather than at home. The FA Trophy final is played at Ta' Qali every year.

The reshaping came in stages. The Millennium Stand replaced the old East Stand in 2002 and added around 5,000 seats. In 2016 the pitch was relaid as SISGrass hybrid, which is what the players run on now. The 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship final was held here.

The stadium has also served as a concert venue — Bruce Springsteen in 1984, Madonna and U2 both in 1993, Zucchero in 2017.

A separate National Football Centre, built at a cost of about €15 million, opened at the Ta' Qali complex in 2025. The stadium itself is due to be rebuilt under the City of Football Ta' Qali masterplan.
