The ground's name changed twice. What is now Tannadice Park started as open land used for football through the 1870s; Johnstone Wanderers enclosed it with a timber stand in 1891, working the natural slope of the site into the terracing. When Dundee East End took over the tenancy, the field became known as Clepington Park. The name changed again in 1909, when Dundee Hibernian — later renamed Dundee United — took the lease, and the ground was renamed for Tannadice Street.

The record crowd here has stood since 16 November 1966: 28,000 packed in for an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup tie against FC Barcelona.

That conversion followed the Taylor Report, with James Paul Associates overseeing the rebuild through the 1990s: the two-tier George Fox Stand went up in 1992, the East Stand followed in 1994 and was later renamed for Eddie Thompson, and the Fair Play Stand completed the work in 1997. The pitch is natural grass with undersoil heating, though Dundee's wet climate still gets the better of the drainage often enough that matches are occasionally called off for waterlogging. The ground carried no sponsor's name at all until June 2024.
