TEDA Soccer Stadium
Tianjin, China
The TEDA Soccer Stadium in Tianjin is defined less by its architecture than by the event that nearly destroyed it. The ground sits in the Economic-Technological Development Area, a name that clings to the venue even after the original club departed.
The site holds a specific history in its bones. In 2015, a series of explosions at a nearby port tore through the city and left the stadium severely damaged, forcing a closure that lasted for years. The recovery has been thorough. The reconstruction finished in 2023, bringing with it a new hybrid grass system that anchors artificial fibres into the natural turf to withstand the wear of professional play. The seats were replaced entirely, and the lighting was upgraded, ensuring the pitch is ready for the Chinese Super League.
Visitors to a match today will notice the scale of the stands, which wrap around the field with a relatively tight angle, keeping the crowd close to the action.
The venue has also served as a home for international fixtures, hosting the Iraq national football team on several occasions. While the capacity figures vary between reports, it is a functional space, built for football, but its identity is tied to the resilience of the city it sits within.
