The Hawthorns

Four months of building, and the ground on Halfords Lane opened on 3 September 1900. That is the thing supporters of Вест Бромвич Альбион reach for first, and it holds: no Football League club has built and opened a home since without doing it on the other side of that line.

The club moved in on opening day and never moved out. Зе Хоторнс has stayed where it was put, with the same tenant, for the whole of its life.

The surface is where the ground's century-old bones meet something modern. It runs on Desso GrassMaster: ninety-five per cent natural grass, five per cent synthetic fibre stitched down into the root zone so the pitch holds together when the weather turns.
