The Prestige Group Stadium
Hartlepool, United Kingdom
Formerly: Victoria Ground, Northern Gas and Power Stadium, Super 6 Stadium, Suit Direct Stadium
The ground sits on clay that was once a limestone quarry, though the sponsors have changed it often enough to confuse anyone visiting for the first time.
It was built in 1995 to comply with the Taylor Report recommendations following the Hillsborough disaster, replacing a temporary wooden structure that had survived since a Zeppelin bombing raid in 1916. The demolition of that old shelter reduced the capacity from over 10,000 to roughly 7,800. The stand is named after Cyril Knowles, the former manager who died of brain cancer in 1991.
The ground has hosted England Women’s national team matches and served as a backup venue for Middlesbrough when they were locked out of Ayresome Park in 1986. It saw a crowd trouble incident in 2000 during a play-off match against Darlington, where manager Dave Hodgson was struck by a coin. The stadium also hosted the Pitch Invasion Festival in 2012, where James Arthur performed before winning The X Factor . In 1971, the Swedish pop group Arrival (later ABBA ) performed a concert there.
