The Saffrons
Eastbourne, United Kingdom
The Saffrons stands on Compton Place Road in Eastbourne, where the ground has held its place since 1884. It is not a single-purpose site, but the one ground in the town that hosts football, cricket, and hockey, with a sand-dressed astroturf pitch for the latter sitting alongside the natural grass surface used for the game. The main stand, facing the pitch, is the Sid Myall & Taffy Jones Stand, which seats 200 spectators; the capacity for a football match is 3,000, and the highest recorded attendance was 7,378 for an FA Cup qualifying match against Hastings United on 10 October 1953.
The structure of the ground is defined by a series of rebuilds. The Larkins Field End grandstand was built in the 1930s, followed by the East Terrace in 1946 and a covered stand on the Meads Road side in 1962. The Larkins Field End stand was destroyed by an arson attack in 1969 and then by a hurricane in 1987, leading to the construction of the current stand in 1994, the same year that floodlights were installed. The main turnstile, originally built in 1914, was restored after a fire in 2004.
Eastbourne Saffrons Sports Club Trust manages the venue, which spans 18 to 22 acres. The cricket capacity is 4,500. The ground is adjacent to the town hall and approximately a 15-minute walk from the railway station. Eastbourne Town Football Club, originally known as Devonshire Park FC, has played football there since 1886. The stadium has never been officially renamed.
