Tipsport Aréna
Banská Bystrica, Slovakia
Formerly: Zimný štadión Banská Bystrica, iClinic Aréna
The arena sits in the Hronské predmestie district of Banská Bystrica.
The venue opened in the winter of 1956. The club, HC '05 Banská Bystrica, moved in when the ice was laid, and the building has been renamed several times since—first Zimný štadión Banská Bystrica, then iClinic Aréna, and now Tipsport Aréna. It is the only ice rink in the city, and the building is distinct from the modern, grey-roofed arena shown in other photographs, which sits further along the river and appears to be a separate facility. The main stand has been rebuilt twice, in 2009 and again in 2014, with the timberwork kept intact through the latter renovation. The capacity is 3,016 for matches, though the room can be reconfigured for larger events.
The entrance area is paved with asphalt and lined with small vendor booths carrying club branding and sponsorship logos. A sign on one of the kiosks explicitly bans smoking inside the building. The roof of the main stand is covered in red material, contrasting with the dark wood of the windows below. The building is set back from the river, and the water flows past a stone wall and green railing. The entire complex feels utilitarian, built for function rather than spectacle, with the river providing a constant backdrop to the matches played on the ice inside.
