Ground was broken in 1939, then the war stopped everything, and the work resumed only after it — German prisoners of war laid the stands that stand in the Narimanov district today. By the time the gates opened in September 1951, the ground carried Joseph Stalin's name.

The crowd figure that still stands in the books belongs to 1960, when 50,000 came to watch Neftçi play Galatasaray — a number the current ground could not hold twice over. Neftçi stayed until 2014, more than six decades in one place, and FK Baku passed through as well.

The rebuild of 2011–2012 cost $10 million from the Presidential Reserve Fund and pushed capacity to 31,200, with the pitch relaid to FIFA standards. The natural grass has had to take more than football since: the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup final, archery at the 2015 European Games, and, between matchdays, concerts by Shakira, Elton John and Tarkan.
