The ground opened on 29 April 2001, built for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

The record crowd has nothing to do with the World Cup. On 23 November 2003, 42,223 came for a J. League Division 2 match against Omiya Ardija, the afternoon Albirex Niigata secured promotion to J1 — still the highest official attendance the ground has taken.

The track was removed in the 2014 renovation.

The surface is a cold-season Western mix — Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass and Tall Fescue — and it has won the J.League Best Pitch Award five times: 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2015.

Tohoku Electric Power bought the rights in 2007 at ¥120 million a year; in September 2013 Denka took them at ¥70 million, giving the ground its current name, Denka Big Swan Stadium .
