Tolka Park

Tolka Park sits on the north bank of the River Tolka in Drumcondra — the address it still carries. It opened in 1924, which places it among the older grounds still hosting league football in Dublin, including the 15,000 who saw Ireland face Wales there in February 1981.

Shelbourne have called it home since 1989. In 1999 the club paid for a new stand behind the Drumcondra End goal, making Tolka Park the first all-seater ground in Ireland and setting capacity at 6,450. Work through 2024 to fix up the Riverside stand there — new seats, safe-standing rails — has left the ground with a capacity of 5,750.

The bigger change came in 2024, when Shelbourne secured a 250-year lease on the stadium from the city council for €1.5 million in cash and in-kind contribution, with a commitment to rebuild the ground by December 2026. What that rebuild does to the pitch, still natural grass, and to a capacity that has swung between 3,500 and 9,680 depending on the safety rules of the day, is the question hanging over Richmond Road now.
